Poker Games Coming to Facebook
Facebook, since its inception, has become the most popular social networking site on the Internet today. It is free to use by individuals and business entities. The program is used by colleges, high schools, transportation firms, radio stations, television stations, townships, municipalities, and many other businesses. Facebook has long been a great marketing tool for businesses and a great place for individuals to network with family, friends, co-workers, and potential employers. Now, Facebook is jumping into the online poker world. Poker games are beginning to show up on the social networking website, which features video games such as Mafia Wars and Farmville. As poker games begin to arrive on the Facebook scene, this will catapult the popularity of the gaming and poker industries to new heights.
One cannot rule out the debut of poker games on other social networking sites such as MySpace, because video game developers will look to get their feet wet in every outlet available to them. The news of another poker game coming to Facebook has elated many poker players that belong to the social networking site, because it would allow them to play poker and talk with their friends and family members all in one place without having to visit separate sites. The first poker game for Facebook will be developed by the creator of Ultima, Richard Garriott, who also created the short-lived game known as Tabula Rasa. The social gaming venture he is about to create will be known as Portalarium. The games Garriott will create for Facebook will not always be poker centered, but his first game will be a poker game.
There are some poker games on Facebook being used by members of the social networking site currently. Those games are Zynga’s Texas Hold’Em and Playfish’s Poker Rivals. The games to be released by Garriott, both poker and other genres, will also be available across various outlets aside from Facebook. Garriott will make his games playable on MySpace and the iPhone as well. With the invention of his poker game, Garriott said that he will also come up with a new plug-in for Facebook games aside from Adobe’s Flash, which is not compatible with the iPod, iPhone, or the iPad. Garriott had the following to say about the potential release of his poker game for Facebook:
“If you look at the state-of-the-art in social media gaming right now, it lags behind a lot of the more experienced developers by a fairly significant margin.”
