Poker Domain Sells for $1 Million
Have you ever dreamed of owning a domain name, using it for a couple of years, and then turning it around and selling it for a large chunk of change? If so, then this story is for you. A story about the sale of a domain name has made its way around the internet like wildfire. In fact, the story is so big because it involves a web domain from the poker industry. Whenever there is a news story involving the poker industry it tends to get a lot of notice. This time the story involves the selling of the domain name known as Poker.org. The company that presided over the sale is known as Sedo, a domain name broker, and they claim they sold the domain name for a cool $1 million. This is not, however, the largest amount of money spent on a domain name. In the spring of 2009, Toys”R”Us bought the domain name Toys.com for around $5 million, Business.com has changed hands for $7.5 million, and Sex.com sold for $15 million at one point. Poker.org is the largest amount of money ever spent for a .org domain name.
Kathy Nielsen, director of sales for Sedo, had the following to say:
“We expect to see growing demand for .org domains, as organizations and individual investors are recognizing their full value and potential. We reckon it has more to do with making sure that no other company recognizes the full value and potential of an applicable name, but that might just be us.”
The company that previously owned the Poker.org domain name was National A1 Advertising and it was sold to PokerCompany.com. PokerCompany.com also owns other poker related domain names such as Craps.net, Rakeback.org, and Blackjack.org. Domain names based on .org are growing rapidly across the Internet as they are among the top three most popular domain names alongside .com and .net. The previous high for a .org sale was roughly $198,000. PokerCompany.com had the following to say about the $1 million purchase of Poker.org:
“Poker.org is an integral part of our growth strategy, and will provide great dividends now and into the future.”
The $1 million sale of Poker.org to PokerCompany.com is only a small sign of how large the poker industry has become over the past couple of decades. In fact, poker as a whole really took off to new heights with the advent of the Internet and online gaming.

If the .org site was sold for 1 million dollars doesn’t it make you curious as to how much the owner of the .com site makes off internet poker? If he was willing to spend one mil on the .org site then I’m sure he is already benefiting like crazy and now with both sites, his profits will be through the roof.
