Mount Airy Wants Table Games
Mount Airy, one of the newer casinos in the state of Pennsylvania, wants table games on its floors and they have applied for those games through the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in the month of March. Mount Airy first received its gaming license for slot machines in 2007 and has since applied for table games. A hearing occurred in March of 2010, following a couple of postponements, with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to determine whether or not the casino is fit enough to operate table games. Table games in Pennsylvania became legal early in 2010 when the state’s General Assembly approved their use in an effort to close a $200 million budget gap.
Many in the gambling industry believe that the casino will quickly become a popular destination for gamblers in the Northeast region of the United States, one that will rival the likes of those located in the Lake Tahoe area. This thought was first mentioned by George Toth, the president and chief executive officer of Mount Airy. He made this remark to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board at the casino’s hearing in the month of March. Toth also told members of the board during the hearing that the majority of the casino’s customers come from New Jersey, which helps bring the state of Pennsylvania out of state money.
Mount Airy, the only casino in the state with a hotel, faced controversy in 2010 dealing with underage gambling. The casino had to pay $100,000 in fines because of underage gambling. The Mount Airy casino has helped to create jobs and increase the income of the area since it opened its doors a couple of years ago. President and chief executive officer of the Greater Pocono Chamber of Commerce, Bob Phillips, had the following to say about the casino’s effect on the economy:
“It will increase the local wage tax, the local tourist trade, traffic count, and provide additional revenue sharing for local projects critical to infrastructure, a tremendous benefit to our community. To me it all makes good business sense.”
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board received eight letters in favor of Mount Airy having table games and two letters in opposition to Mount Airy having table games. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has only a couple of months following an application by a casino to make its decision as to whether or not table games can be permitted.
