How to Play Soft Hands

The game of blackjack is a game of skill, requiring quick thinking and decision making on the part of every player involved in a match or tournament. Quick thinking can be useful to some players and very harmful to others based on how well they can deal with pressure and make a decision. One of those decisions is how to play a soft hand dealt to a player by the dealer. Soft hands are not welcome by all blackjack players because there are so many decisions to be made. Other blackjack players welcome a soft hand because they have played one in the past and know what it takes to play the soft hand successfully.

Since there are so many decisions to be made when playing a soft hand, errors can occur, ultimately hurting the player’s payback and their chances of winning the hand or the tournament in general. Players should not fear soft hands at all though. They can be a blessing in disguise for the right player. If a player makes the right decision with the right strategy, a soft hand can reduce the House Edge considerably. For the most part, a soft hand usually contains an Ace.

If the player is holding either an Ace and 2 or an Ace and 3 then that player should double their bet based on what the dealer is holding. To double the bet the dealer should be holding a 5 or a 6. If the dealer is holding anything else then the player should hit. If the player is holding an Ace and a 4 or an Ace and a 5 then the bet should always be hit unless the dealer is holding a 4, 5, or 6. If the dealer is holding a 4, 5, or 6 the best bet for the player is to double down.

One of the most common mistakes made by Blackjack players, veterans and amateurs, is to stick when getting an Ace and a 6. The player should always hit their hand unless the dealer is showing a 3, 4, 5 or 6. When dealt an Ace and a 7 the player should stand if the dealer comes up with a 2, 7, or an 8. The player should double if the dealer is showing a 3, 4, 5 or 6 and hit all the other dealer hands. If a player has an Ace and an 8 and an Ace and a 9 the player should stand/stick, which will ultimately create a good outcome.
