Atlantic City has long been the capital of the gambling world on the East Coast of the United States, but that is slowly beginning to change with the development and advancement of the casinos in the state of Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth has approved its casinos applications for table games, which means that poker, blackjack, craps, and roulette are going to be added to the docket of games in Pennsylvania casinos. Atlantic City relies on poker players and other gamblers visiting the city for more than one day to try their luck at games of chance. Now that there are casinos in Pennsylvania, specifically in Bethlehem, many of the gamblers from the state of PA do not have to travel to Atlantic City any longer. This means that fewer people are visiting the casinos along the Atlantic Ocean, causing a decline in revenue from not only gambling but also lodging and food.

A member of Spectrum Gaming Group L.L.C., Harvey Perkins, had the following to say about overnight gambling destinations outside of Atlantic City:

“Overnight gamers are more valuable as customers, vs. day-trippers. At the end of the day, these types of added amenities increase the significant array of challenges faced by the Atlantic City gaming industry in the future.”

The reason that overnight gamblers are a more valuable commodity than those who only make a day trip to the casino is that if the gambler stays at the casino’s hotel they are more likely to gamble for a longer period of time, thus spending more money in the casino itself. The gambler also has to foot the bill for more food and for the room since they have decided to stay overnight.

The handful of casinos already in operation across the state of Pennsylvania are beginning to develop plans for hotels to be located on site either next to their casino or just down the road from their casino. Casinos that already have hotels on site have begun to add to the number of rooms, anticipating more overnight stays for gamblers who visit. As hotels begin to be built at casinos in the state of Pennsylvania, the casinos in Atlantic City are beginning to worry about how they will continue to bring in revenue to stay open in an already struggling city.

Mark Juliano, the Chief Executive Officer for Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc., had the following to say about the situation:

“We know that table games are coming. We believe there will be an impact on table-games business . . . certainly.”
